Solomon Water has signed a declaration of intention (DOI) with the European Union (EU). The DOI is to provide funding for Solomon Water projects to improve access to safe water and improved sanitation in Honiara.

The DOI, worth EUR 18m, was signed in Honiara yesterday by Solomon Water Board Chair Donald Marahare, the Ambassador of the European Union for Solomon Islands, H.E Sujiro Seam and the Permanent Secretary for Finance and Treasury Mckinnie Dentana.

"This Declaration of Intention with our partners marks a significant milestone in our efforts to improve water infrastructure in the country. Our vision is Safe Water for a Healthy Nation and this joint effort will play a transformative role in ensuring that the people we serve in urban and peri-urban areas have access to safe water and improved sanitation" says Mr. Marahare.

In his remarks, Ambassador Seam reaffirmed EU’s role as a reliable partner of Solomon Islands. “The European Union has supported water, sanitation and hygiene in rural areas of Solomon Islands since 2014. This long-term commitment translates today into the EU grant of EUR 18m towards this project, which will provide the people of Honiara and other urban areas with access to quality water, thus contributing to the improvement of people’s lives. This EU support is not only in line with the Solomon Islands government’s priorities, but it also aligns to the EU’s Global Gateway strategy”.

The DOI provides funding for Solomon Water’s Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project (UWSSSP).  UWSSSP is implementing high priority projects to increase access to piped water supply and sanitation service in Honiara and in Tulagi, Auki and Noro as well as reduce reliance on groundwater and rainwater harvest, and ensure more efficient use of water. The project will also enhance hygiene awareness, promote water conservation and improve fecal sludge management.

Key UWSSSP projects are the Kongulai Water Treatment Plant, the Honiara Water Supply Trunk Main Upgrade Project, the Honiara Water Reservoirs Project, the Water Catchment Management and Paid Ecosystem Services Project and Solomon Water’s WASH Programme.

We’re with you in improving value, improving services and improving for the future - all aimed at delivering our vision of “Safe water for a healthy nation”.
